  17.     I'm not sure if the problems you're having with Kermit running on
  18.     your system are a result of this, but I think I can tell you with
  19.     nearly 100% assurance that you got stuck with an RPI modem.  What's
  20.     RPI?  A complete answer is to be found in the Kermit FAQ, but
  21.     briefly it means that your modem does not have data compression or
  22.     error correction built in, but instead depends on having those
  23.     features supplied by the software through a proprietary interface
  24.     that must be licensed from Rockwell.  If the box said it has those
  25.     features (usually says "in software"), that's the Comit that came
  26.     with it.  Zoom may now offer 14.4 modems with EC and compression in
  27.     hardware, but they were known for selling cheap RPI modems not long
  28.     ago.  You can know for sure-- ATI3 or I4 should return "Rockwell
  29.     RPI" if it is one.  Return it for refund or exchange if you can.
